On December 5, 2018, US rapper 2 Milly sued Epic Games for unauthorized use of one of his dance moves in Epic’s massively successful Fortnite franchise. The suit is shedding light on the industry’s practice of integrating hip-hop dance moves into video games without the artist’s permission. In the case of Fortnite, players have the ability to purchase “emotes”, which can consist of dance moves, in order to customize their in-game avatars.
2 Milly introduced the dance in question — dubbed the “Milly Rock” — back in 2014. Since then, the dance has garnered quite a bit of popularity in the hip-hop community, recently used in shows by the likes of Jennifer Lopez and BeyoncĂ©.
